I was mountain bike racer and really knew nothing about road racing until I started working with J.R. At first I couldn't believe all the workouts and how much he had me riding my bike, but soon came to realize that every workout had its place and a reason behind it. All I had to do was follow his schedules, eat right and focus on being consistent. In three years, he helped me win 2 national championships. He is supportive but tough, and he knows his stuff.

Two years before this photo was taken, we enrolled in JR Smith’s winter indoor cycle camp. The summer following the first camp we purchased our road bikes and hired JR to coach us year round. By simply following his coaching regimen, we were able to haul some gold out of the Utah Summer Games cycling events.

Coaching by Jill has helped me learn how to train smart--not just train hard. Following the training program Jill prepared for me in the summer of 2005, I won the Tour of Utah Stage race for my racing category. I would highly recommend Jill as a coach to anyone who wants to take their cycling performance to a higher level.

JR has helped me have one of my very best seasons and a World's Master Triathlon Championship. I have now won six and we are not through yet.

When it comes to cycling, anybody can train hard, but training smart and training effectively is another story. Deciding to become more fit, I put smooth tires on my daughter's old Specialized Stumpjumper and started riding using the no pain no gain method. But the chest pain on a climb one day forced me to get a cardiac stent placed. I set a goal to participate in the Huntsman World Senior and I continued riding. JR was the difference between training hard and training smart. As JR brought me along the next 12 months with his custom training schedule, monitoring, and frequent motivational dialogue, I learned and accomplished more than I ever imagined. The results: Senior Games: 1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze. Weight: 191 to 151 lbs. Not a bad first year of riding...especially for a 65-year old. Hey JR, thanks! I couldn't have done it without you!

J.R., We're sliding into the last few days of Power Cycling Camp. I have to say, I look great. Perhaps you should market a "look good in a swimsuit session" starting in April. I've never looked better, or felt better. I can ping pong my heart like a fine tuned instrument. Up in minutes(s), and down 40 beats in 30 seconds. I've not really had a chance to check-out my on-road fitness yet, but I'm very pleased with my endurance levels. I even rode for an hour after the time trial this morning. The nice part is that I'm confident to know I can do it, and better yet, what zone I need to keep it in for my better health. Anyway, cheers to a great camp, astute and aware fellow cyclists, minus 15 lbs. and a great time. I'd love to do some racing this summer, and I will conquer each and every canyon. Kudos on a great program. Thanks, Carol

I started riding bikes about ten years ago and discovered I had a knack for it. A competitive person by nature, I wanted to push myself, get better, and try some racing despite coming into the sport in my late 30's. So, I hired Coach J.R and have worked with him for about five years. J.R. has helped me achieve higher levels of fitness and skill than I could have ever achieved on my own. I am able to get out and mix it up with the big girls in some National Race Calendar (NRC) events and have the confidence to know I deserve to be out there with them. Coach J.R.'s workouts are purposeful and well timed to allow his athletes to perform at their best in their most important events. He has taught me how to train and race smart. It is because of his expertise in scheduling and his support that I achieved my 3 goals this year: 1) Get on the podium at Master's Nationals, 2) Perform well at the GA state time trial (I won!), 3) Race consistently throughout the season and achieve an upgrade to Category 1. We did it --- together! I highly recommend J.R. Smith Coaching.
